Dean Wolstenholme, Snr

(1757 – 1837)
Duck Shooting Oil on canvas
20.5 x 26 cm
Acc. No: 1700

Condition: This painting was selected for treatment as the old retouching no longer matched the original paint in the sky area. The retouching appeared quite extensive and was in most cases lighter than the original paint. However, a few areas appeared darker in colour. The painting might have been restored on two separate occasions. The overall condition was sound. The painting had been previously lined where the original tacking margins had been removed. The original varnish had discoloured with time and surface dirt was also present. Dirt was caught between the canvas and stretcher bar.

Treatment: Surface dirt, varnish and re-touching were removed in separate layers. This was done with carefully selected reagents and solvents following numerous tests. Dirt was removed from between the canvas and the stretcher bar. The backs of the canvas and stretcher were cleaned. A brush conservation varnish was applied. Retouching was carried out in the areas of the tear using restoration colours and a final varnish applied. The frame was cleaned and the painting was secured using brass plates. This treatment was carried out in 2004.
